Where are the best spots for dinner across the river in Gatineau?
Vieux-Hull is five to seven minutes from downtown Ottawa, and its dinner scene is better than most people on this side of the river assume. One pick is worth a longer drive.
-
Les Fougères
Farm-to-table cooking rooted in West Quebec terroir, in a heritage building in the Gatineau Hills. This is the one to make a night of, and the one that has earned the longest reputation across the river.
-
Caméline
Fresh pasta made in-house daily by the chef-owner, with an Italian menu that leans on Quebec ingredients — rigatoni cacciatore, spaghetti al ragù. A warm neighbourhood room rather than a formal one.
-
Soif Bar à vin
Sommelier Véronique Rivest's cork-lined wine bar, open since 2014. Seasonal small plates from Quebec producers and a list of roughly 120 bottles, heavy on natural wine, that changes almost weekly. Every server is a trained sommelier.
-
Bistro CoqLicorne
A contemporary bistro known for imaginative, colourful plates and reinvented poutines in a casual room. The relaxed, fun option on this list.
-
Pärlé Bistro Ludique
Creative local bistro cooking and seasonal cocktails, with a large board-game collection and staff to teach you the games. Best for a playful night rather than a quiet one.
Les Fougères is technically in Chelsea, about 25 minutes from downtown Ottawa, but worth the extra driving time. Caméline, Soif and CoqLicorne are in Vieux-Hull, close enough to each other that there is a fallback nearby if a table is full. Pärlé is a short drive farther out. Check hours before crossing the bridge early in the week.
